RFID
RFID
The potential of RFID is significant. Thanks to RFID there is more data available than ever before. This new data provides better and faster visibility and accountability throughout the supply chain.

GENCO Supply Chain Solutions has been working with major manufacturers and retailers for the last five years, using RFID systems specifically geared to enhance track and trace capabilities in warehouses.

GENCO Supply Chain Solutions believes the key to the current and future value of RFID implementation is in how the technology is applied. Instead of tagging product just prior to shipping, GENCO Supply Chain Solutions is evaluating how it can apply RFID tags when product is initially received, so tag data can be used throughout the entire warehouse operation. Data can then be accessed any time through a secure Web-based portal to gain business intelligence, which contributes to improvements in the supply chain.

RFID Validation
GENCO Supply Chain Solutions conducted an RFID test program for product being sold to salvage dealers at a customer's return center in McDonough, Georgia.

The return center processes more than 3,400 pallets and 800,000 items each month. While the salvage process already had a high accuracy rate, GENCO Supply Chain Solutions wanted even better accuracy and a greater deterrent to fraudulent claims.

RFID technology proved to be the silent supervisor, monitoring and recording details of product movement and alerting shipping personnel of errors.

RFID tags are now placed on pallets at the stretch wrap machine. In the outbound loading area, each forklift is equipped with an RFID reader and a screen, which signals the operator whether pallets for a particular order are included on the accompanying Bill of Lading. During loading, the operator is immediately given several warnings, including a flashing red screen and an audio alert if a pallet is about to be placed on the wrong truck or if the number of pallets in the shipment is incorrect.

The number of claims, during the post 12 months RFID implementation, were reduced by 54.3 percent and the dollar value of claims decreased by 29.7 percent. GENCO Supply Chain Solutions has now expanded RFID deployment to all its outbound operations at the return center.
