Technology helping to reduce accidents

Driver safety is a big concern for managers of a supply chain. Accidents may be unavoidable, but new reports show that technology is helping to minimize their impact.

Research by the Highway Loss Data Institute shows that collision avoidance systems may help reduce the overall number of accidents. The new technology, currently limited to high-end luxury vehicles, detects objects in the path of the car and sounds an alarm warning the driver of a potential collision. Some systems even automatically brake if the driver fails to respond.

The technology has reduced property damage claims for some Acura and Mercedes-Benz models by 14 percent and could be extremely useful if applied to all vehicles, CNN Money reports. A study by two Kansas State University civil engineers found that one in 10 fatal crashes in the U.S. involved large trucks.

While the study found that just 3% of traffic accidents involved semi-trucks, those accidents tended to be more serious. Many companies are working to improve driver safety among their vehicles and collision avoidance systems may just be the new technology that can work. Working with a third party logistics specialist can help firms reduce injury and damage caused by accidents.
