SmartWay Transport Partnership is an innovative collaboration between the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the freight industry designed to improve energy efficiency while significantly reducing greenhouse gases and air pollution.
GENCO will contribute to the Partnership’s goal to reduce 33 million to 66 million metric tons of carbon dioxide and up to 200,000 tons of nitrogen oxide per year by 2012. GENCO’s strategy for achieving this goal is to improve the environmental performance of its freight operations.
“By joining SmartWay Transport Partnership, we look forward to providing even more value to our customers, both in the level of service and in promoting smart environmental practices in our freight operations,” said Dan Sellers, president of GENCO’s Transportation Logistics business unit. “SmartWay’s commitment to protecting the environment, reducing fuel consumption and improving air quality fits right in with GENCO’s values of striving for better practices in all of our business processes.”
Launched in February 2004, SmartWay Transport Partnership aims to achieve fuel savings of up to 150 million barrels of fuel per year. The Partnership brings together major freight shippers, trucking companies, railroads, logistics companies, and trade/professional associations to pursue mutually beneficial efficiencies that result in emissions reductions and other environmental improvements, as well as cost savings to the companies. The Partnership currently has than more 450 partners.
